A viral fan concept imagining Jaws—the legendary killer shark—as a Dead by Daylight killer has taken one major step closer to reality, thanks to a surprising comment made by the game’s own director. In a recent developer Q&A, Game Director Mathieu Côté addressed the now-iconic concept and revealed that conversations about how such a killer might work in-game have actually happened behind the scenes.
From Viral Concept to Potential Reality
Two months ago, a fan-made video depicting a “Jaws”-inspired killer in Dead by Daylight went viral across the horror gaming community. The concept showed survivors navigating a partially flooded map while being hunted by an unseen underwater force. Creative, eerie, and surprisingly immersive, the idea captured the imagination of thousands—raising the question: could it ever happen for real?
Now, fans have more than just speculation. During an interview, Mathieu Côté directly referenced the video and dropped a surprising confirmation:
“We’ve talked about Jaws. How do you do Jaws in DBD? And it’s not impossible. It’s not simple, but it’s not impossible. You just add a little black smoke here and there and then—there it works. It’s a nightmare. It doesn’t have to make sense.”
Why It’s a Big Deal
Côté’s comments are significant for two reasons. First, Dead by Daylight rarely teases potential licensed killers unless serious thought has been given to them. Second, the idea of a non-humanoid killer—a shark, no less—is a bold deviation from the game’s usual structure, which could open the door to more inventive killers in the future.
This echoes past sentiments from Behavior Interactive about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the game. While the studio has featured supernatural beings and monstrous entities before, a massive underwater predator like the shark from Jaws would be a first.
What Is Jaws, and Why Does It Matter?
For those unfamiliar, Jaws is a 1975 horror-thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg. Based on the novel by Peter Benchley, it follows a monstrous great white shark that terrorizes the fictional beach town of Amity Island. The film is credited with inventing the summer blockbuster and has left a lasting legacy in both horror and pop culture.
Its central villain—an enormous, silent predator—represents primal fear in its purest form. That’s what makes it so fitting for Dead by Daylight, a game built on atmosphere, tension, and the hunt.
The Road Ahead
While Côté emphasized that making a Jaws killer would not be simple, the key takeaway for fans is that it’s not off the table. Behavior has a track record of making the seemingly impossible work—whether it was bringing Silent Hill’s Pyramid Head, Alien’s Xenomorph, or Stranger Things’ Demogorgon to life.
So, while no official Jaws chapter has been announced yet, fans can now dream a little bigger. The waters of Dead by Daylight might not be safe forever.
Stay tuned—because if Jaws is coming, we’re going to need a bigger fog.
