As Dead by Daylight approaches its highly anticipated tenth anniversary, the community is already speculating about what surprises developer Behaviour Interactive might have planned. New chapters, unexpected collaborations, and gameplay changes are all expected — but one rumor in particular is starting to gain serious traction: Dead by Daylight could finally become free-to-play.
At first glance, the idea might sound shocking. After all, Dead by Daylight has been a premium game since launch. But in today’s gaming landscape, the move actually makes more sense than ever.
Why Going Free-to-Play Would Make Perfect Sense
Over the years, Dead by Daylight has evolved into much more than a simple multiplayer horror game. It has become a massive live-service platform packed with purchasable content: licensed killers, survivors, cosmetics, battle passes, and crossover collaborations with some of the biggest horror franchises in entertainment.
At this point, the initial purchase price is arguably no longer the main source of revenue. The real business lies in everything players buy after entering the ecosystem.

Games like PUBG: Battlegrounds, Destiny 2, and The Sims 4 all started as premium experiences before eventually becoming free-to-play. The logic was simple: remove the entry barrier, massively increase the player base, and monetize through in-game content instead.
And of course, there’s the giant example everyone looks at today: Fortnite. The game is completely free to access, yet players continuously spend money on cosmetics, collaborations, and seasonal content once they become invested.
Dead by Daylight is already perfectly structured for this kind of model.
The Steam Page Changes That Started the Rumor
The rumor itself began circulating after fans noticed several unusual backend updates happening to Dead by Daylight’s Steam page.
According to community observations, a large number of the game’s trailers are reportedly scheduled to be removed and most probably replaced with a single unified trailer that was released days ago. What makes this particularly interesting is the content of that trailer itself.
The new promotional video reportedly acts as a complete summary of Dead by Daylight, showcasing not only the core gameplay but also the game’s enormous list of licensed collaborations and horror icons accumulated over the years.
Most importantly, the trailer allegedly ends with the phrase:
“Play Now.”
That wording immediately caught the attention of players. While “play now” can obviously be simple marketing language, many fans believe it could also hint at a future where players can instantly download and access the game without paying an upfront cost.
Combined with the timing of the tenth anniversary celebration, the theory suddenly doesn’t feel so far-fetched.

A Smart Move for the Future of Dead by Daylight
If Dead by Daylight truly goes free-to-play, it could represent one of the biggest turning points in the game’s history.
A free entry point would dramatically increase accessibility, bring in waves of new players, and potentially revitalize the matchmaking ecosystem across every platform. At the same time, Behaviour Interactive would still retain an enormous monetization system through cosmetics, DLC chapters, licensed characters, and battle pass content.
In many ways, the game already behaves like a free-to-play title — the only remaining barrier is the initial purchase itself.
For now, nothing has been officially confirmed. But with the anniversary approaching and the Steam page changes raising eyebrows across the community, speculation is only getting stronger.
And honestly, if Dead by Daylight really wants to survive another ten years, going free-to-play may be the most logical evolution possible.
