Back in 2023, excitement surged among horror fans when a film adaptation of Dead by Daylight was announced. The project, backed by Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, promised a “scary cinematic adaptation” of the hugely popular asymmetrical multiplayer game developed by Behaviour Interactive.
The announcement was further strengthened by the involvement of David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Orphan) and Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl), who were set to co-write the screenplay. Despite the strong creative team, however, the project has since gone quiet.
About a year ago, reports suggested that the film was encountering script-related issues, and since then, no meaningful updates have followed. At the time of writing, the adaptation still lacks both a director and a studio partner, leaving its future uncertain and raising concerns that development may be stalled.
But while the live-action movie appears to be stuck in limbo, a new rumor hints at a different—and potentially more viable—direction for the franchise.
According to Dread Central, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are currently seeking writers for a Dead by Daylight animated series. The report suggests that the show would adapt the core premise of the game: four survivors working together to repair generators and escape a relentless killer, all while serving a mysterious and malevolent force known as The Entity.
If confirmed, the animated format could prove to be a smarter and more manageable approach compared to a live-action film. The Dead by Daylight universe is vast, stylized, and constantly expanding, featuring dozens of killers and survivors, many of whom draw inspiration from both original concepts and iconic horror traditions. Recreating this complexity in live action would require significant resources and logistical coordination, whereas animation offers far greater creative flexibility.
Since its launch in 2016, the game has amassed over 60 million players worldwide, evolving into a multimedia franchise that includes board games, comics, and a wide range of collaborations. Its strong visual identity and episodic-style gameplay loop naturally lend themselves to serialized storytelling—making an animated series feel like a natural fit.
For now, the animated project remains a rumor, and fans will have to wait for official confirmation. Still, with the live-action film seemingly at a standstill, this new development could represent the most promising path forward for bringing the world of Dead by Daylight to screens.
