One of the most iconic killers in Dead by Daylight, Ghost Face, could be facing an uncertain future—not because of in-game balance changes or licensing disputes, but due to looming financial trouble for Fun World, the company that owns the rights to the legendary mask.
A Halloween Giant on the Brink
Fun World, based in Carle Place, New York, has been a major supplier of Halloween costumes, decorations, and accessories since its founding in 1963. Most famously, the company created the Ghost Face mask in the early 1990s—an image that became synonymous with the Scream movie franchise, despite being a pre-existing costume design not originally developed for the films.
According to Alan Geller, the owner of Fun World, the company has traditionally enjoyed annual profitability, even providing bonuses to its employees. However, that financial stability is now in jeopardy. Geller warns that due to extreme new tariffs imposed by the United States on imports from China, 2025 may be the company’s first unprofitable year in decades.
“If the sudden and extreme tariff from China is not reversed, I might be forced to shut the doors permanently,” Geller said. The new tariffs—reportedly as high as 145%—mean American consumers could soon be paying nearly three times more for Halloween items, and businesses like Fun World, which rely on overseas manufacturing, are absorbing much of the cost.
What This Means for Dead by Daylight
Fun World’s troubles could have ripple effects in the gaming world, specifically in Dead by Daylight. Behaviour Interactive’s licensing of Ghost Face was done directly with Fun World—not with the Scream film franchise. This is why the DLC/Chapter is labeled “Ghost Face” in-game and not “Scream” or any direct reference to the movies.
Since Fun World owns the rights to the mask and costume design, any potential shutdown or bankruptcy could jeopardize Behaviour’s ongoing use of the character. While it’s unclear whether an existing license would be revoked or become invalid, the uncertainty alone raises concern among fans and developers alike.
Should Fun World go under, Behaviour might be forced to remove Ghost Face from Dead by Daylight entirely, or rework the character into something legally distinct. It would not be the first time a licensing issue has affected the game’s roster, but it would certainly be one of the most impactful, given the killer’s popularity.
The Bigger Picture
The situation highlights how geopolitical and economic policy can have unexpected effects on pop culture and digital entertainment. A Halloween costume company suffering under trade tariffs may seem far removed from a hit multiplayer horror game, but in this case, they’re intimately connected.
For now, Ghost Face remains a playable and beloved killer in Dead by Daylight, but his long-term future may depend not on the Entity—but on trade policy and international business survival.
