Jason Voorhees Is Back: New Friday the 13th Game and Movie Confirmed as the Franchise Enters a New Era
For years, Friday the 13th fans have been left with little to look forward to in the gaming space. After Friday the 13th: The Game was delisted and eventually shut down, it seemed like Jason Voorhees’ future in video games had come to an end. Now, however, the iconic slasher is enjoying a major resurgence, and a brand-new game is officially on the way.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Jason Universe representative Robbie Barsamian confirmed that a new Friday the 13th video game is currently in development. While no studio, publisher, or gameplay details were revealed, Barsamian made it clear that both a new sequel movie and a new game are among the company’s top priorities.
“I can tell you that a new sequel movie and a new sequel game are at the top of our list,” Barsamian said during the panel. “It’s where most of our energy is going right now, and I can tell you we’re finally in a position to deliver on that.”
Although details remain scarce, the announcement is enough to reignite excitement among fans who have been waiting years for Jason’s return to gaming.
Jason’s Revival Is Already Underway
The timing of the announcement couldn’t be better. Following years of legal disputes that complicated the future of the franchise, Jason Voorhees has made a remarkable comeback across the gaming industry.
In recent months, the hockey-masked killer has appeared in several high-profile titles, including Call of Duty, MultiVersus, and Dead by Daylight. These crossover appearances have introduced Jason to a new generation of players while reminding longtime horror fans why he remains one of the genre’s most recognizable icons.
Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, these collaborations appear to be part of a broader effort to re-establish Friday the 13th/Jason Universe as a major entertainment brand. The renewed visibility has helped keep the character relevant while paving the way for larger projects in the future.
What Could the New Game Look Like?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the announcement is whether this new title will be a direct successor to Friday the 13th: The Game or an entirely different experience.
The original multiplayer title, developed by IllFonic and published by Gun Media, became one of the most recognizable asymmetrical horror games of its era. Players could either take control of Jason or attempt to survive as camp counselors, creating tense and often chaotic multiplayer matches. Despite technical issues and licensing complications, the game earned a loyal following thanks to its authentic recreation of the films.
The horror gaming landscape has evolved significantly since then. Some franchises have embraced retro-style releases, while others have moved toward narrative-driven single-player experiences. With horror games thriving across multiple genres, Jason’s next outing could take many different forms.
A Big Future for Friday the 13th
The new game is only one piece of a much larger revival. The franchise is also expanding into television with Crystal Lake, the upcoming prequel series set to debut this year. The show is expected to explore the origins of the Friday the 13th universe and serves as one of the flagship projects of the Jason Universe initiative.
With a new TV series on the horizon, a new film reportedly in development, recent appearances in some of gaming’s biggest franchises, and a brand-new video game officially confirmed, Jason Voorhees is enjoying a resurgence few would have predicted just a few years ago.
For Friday the 13th fans, the long wait may finally be coming to an end.
