Those who are familiar with the game mentioned in the title of this article will probably have thought of the GTA San Andreas meme 'Here we go again,' and in fact I must say that I also thought of the same thing.
For the uninitiated, Last Year was a game with a very troubled development, which was released as many as three times, initially exclusively with the Discord Store, then on Steam under the name Last Year The Nightmare as a kind of 'reboot' of the Discord game, and then a third time also on Steam, the original version that was released on Discord was released.
I also published several articles updating you on the updates the game was receiving and its improvements:

Last Year was a very promising project that was very successful through the Kickstarter campaign, the team working on it collaborated with Discord by entering into an exclusive release agreement for their Store (maybe many of you may not know this but a few years ago Discord tried to launch into the video game world by hosting a Store to buy games, just like what happens on Steam, Epic Games, GOG etc.), but of course, since Discord's store did not have an excessive fanbase, the game died soon.
After about a year in which the developers did not give any news about the game, like a bolt out of the blue they announced the release finally on Steam, as mentioned before however, the game was revised in some aspects, especially the most important one: the progression system that in the Discord version was not present, and therefore made people who played it get bored right away, in fact there were no perks or skins to unlock, things that instead were released in Last Year The Nightmare on Steam with also a new killer.
The problem was that this version of the game also died, this time the problem was mainly on the balance, in fact the survivors had really a lot of objectives within the map, and the killers were very strong, you could only win if the killer did not know how to play or if you played in team mates with people who knew how to play. You had to craft items, upgrade weapons, walk in groups, and decide well on the classes to use in order to have good combinations in the team. The killer, however, had the ability to ambush through a teleportation system around the corners of the map, which allowed you to instantly kill survivors, who could be rescued a limited number of times as is done within Left 4 Dead with lockers.
They also announced a new killer through a Teaser on Youtube, but as you might imagine, that killer was never released:
The game died yet again, and out of desperation, the team decided to release the original version of the game on Steam as well, the one that was possible to play on Discord (I played it in closed beta), really only causing confusion because at that time there were as many as two versions of the same game on Steam, both paid versions:
In January 2022, an official note was released from the team that worked on Last Year, namely Elastic Games, saying that the game was removed from sale on Steam and that the company declared bankruptcy, some former members moreover, founded a new development team called Neighborhood Games:
For me Last Year was a big wasted opportunity, a game that in the original Discord version was a lot of fun, although there were still some changes to be made to the balance, but unfortunately the choice to take Discord's exclusivity money was not a wise one, and the later version released on Steam did not have the appeal the developers hoped for.
All over you will say, but no.
Because Last Year is coming back, a fourth time.
In fact the development team called 'Undaunted Games' bought the IP and thus the related rights to the game, deciding to take over that project to give it new life, and currently the only thing certain is that it will be Free To Play and will be released on Steam:

This story has the unbelievable, but as an original fan of Last Year, I really hope that this is the time for this game to have the success it deserves.
What about you, have you ever played Last Year?
