SCREAM – Ghostface Legal Battle Could Have Major Implications for Dead by Daylight

A legal dispute over the ownership of the iconic Ghostface mask has erupted into a high-stakes courtroom battle just weeks before the release of Scream 7. Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures have filed a lawsuit in California federal court against Los Angeles-based special effects studio Alterian Ghost Factory, seeking to block the company from pursuing copyright infringement claims tied to the legendary horror visage.

At the center of the dispute is the droopy-eyed mask worn by the Ghostface killer throughout the Scream franchise. According to the complaint, Alterian has recently asserted ownership over the mask’s underlying design and has threatened litigation unless it receives millions of dollars in compensation. Paramount and Spyglass argue that Alterian “intentionally slept on its purported rights” for three decades while the franchise flourished globally.

The origins of the Ghostface mask date back to the original 1996 Scream film, when a producer discovered the mask in a Northern California home being scouted as a filming location. The production team licensed it from Fun World, a costume company that had been manufacturing and selling the mask since the early 1990s. For 30 years, the mask has been licensed for every installment of the franchise.

Alterian, however, claims that Fun World had no right to license the mask because Alterian allegedly created the underlying design first. The studio reportedly sent demand letters in July 2024 asserting copyright ownership and accusing Fun World of infringement. Fun World responded by stating that it had commissioned a Hong Kong-based sculptor under a work-made-for-hire agreement decades ago to create a new Halloween mask line.

Paramount and Spyglass maintain that any claims by Alterian are barred by the statute of limitations, pointing to the company’s inaction despite knowing about Fun World’s licensing agreements since at least the late 1990s or early 2000s. In fact, a 2020 federal court decision found that similar claims were time-barred because the claimant had long been aware of the licensing arrangements.

In their filing, attorneys for Paramount and Spyglass characterized Alterian’s move as an “outrageous attempt” to disrupt the release of a completed film mere weeks before its premiere. They argue that Alterian has never legally established ownership of the mask and will not be able to prove it now.

Potential Fallout Beyond the Big Screen

While the immediate focus is on Scream 7, the outcome of this dispute could ripple far beyond the film franchise itself — particularly into the gaming world.

Ghostface is not only a cinematic icon but also a major presence in other media, including the popular asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight. In the game, Ghostface appears as a licensed killer character, and his inclusion is based on agreements surrounding the mask and its associated intellectual property. Notably, Dead by Daylight’s version of Ghostface is tied more directly to the mask rights rather than to the Scream film narrative itself.

If Alterian were somehow able to successfully challenge the ownership or licensing rights to the Ghostface mask, it could create legal uncertainty for existing and future licensing deals — including collaborations in gaming, merchandise, and other cross-media projects. Even if the lawsuit ultimately fails, the mere presence of litigation can complicate negotiations, renewals, and promotional campaigns tied to the character.

Given how central licensed horror icons are to Dead by Daylight’s business model, any instability surrounding Ghostface’s legal status could potentially affect future content updates, cosmetics, or marketing initiatives involving the character.

A Defining Moment for a Horror Icon

For now, Spyglass and Paramount are seeking a court order to prevent Alterian from moving forward with its threatened lawsuit. As Scream 7 prepares for release, the legal battle underscores how intellectual property disputes can emerge decades after a character’s creation — even when that character has become a global cultural symbol.

Whether the court sides with the studios or allows Alterian’s claims to proceed, the case could set an important precedent regarding long-dormant copyright claims in the entertainment industry.

One thing is certain: Ghostface may be known for stalking victims on screen, but this time, the real drama is unfolding in the courtroom — and its consequences could extend well beyond Woodsboro.
