Slender Man Could Be the Next Big Horror Icon Coming to Dead by Daylight

There may be a very interesting pattern emerging between Fortnite and Dead by Daylight, and if it continues, Slender Man could be the next major horror icon to enter The Fog.

The theory is relatively simple: Fortnite has increasingly become a meeting point for some of the biggest names in horror, while Behaviour Interactive has repeatedly followed similar licensing trends and brought several of those characters into Dead by Daylight. If Slender Man really is heading to Fortnite as part of the upcoming Fortnitemares Halloween event, it could potentially be the first major sign that the character is also being considered for Dead by Daylight.

Of course, there is currently no official confirmation from Behaviour Interactive that Slender Man is coming to Dead by Daylight. However, there are several reasons why the possibility is worth taking seriously.

The Fortnite-to-Dead by Daylight Pattern

The strongest argument comes from what happened with several horror collaborations during 2025.

Fortnitemares 2025 featured an unusually large collection of horror characters, including Jason Voorhees, Art the Clown and Scooby-Doo, alongside other collaborations such as Ghostface and The Grabber. Jason arrived in Fortnite during October, while Art the Clown and the Scooby-Doo characters were also part of the Halloween lineup.

Then, only months later, Behaviour Interactive revealed during Dead by Daylight‘s 10th Anniversary celebrations that several of these same properties would be coming to its own game.

Jason Voorhees became a full Dead by Daylight Killer in June 2026 through a collaboration with Jason Universe.

Behaviour also announced Dead by Daylight: Terrifier, bringing Art the Clown into The Fog, as well as a Scooby-Doo collection scheduled for December 2026.

That is a remarkable overlap.

It does not prove that Fortnite and Dead by Daylight have some kind of formal licensing pipeline, nor does it mean every horror character appearing in Fortnite will eventually appear in Behaviour’s game. But the recent sequence makes the timing of a future Slender Man collaboration particularly interesting.

And Then There Is Slender Man

This is where the theory becomes considerably more intriguing.

Slender Man is in fact expected to become part of Fortnite’s Halloween content in October.

What makes the situation especially interesting is the version of Slender Man that appears to be represented.

According to the analysis circulating among fans, the Fortnite model reportedly features extremely pale or white skin, a completely smooth and featureless face, a black tie and the suggestion of tentacles. Those details are significant because they appear much closer to the earliest incarnation of Slender Man created by Eric Knudsen, better known online as Victor Surge, than to some of the later interpretations of the character.

Slender Man originated in 2009, when Knudsen created two manipulated photographs for a Photoshop contest on the Something Awful forums. The original images depicted a tall, unnaturally thin figure in a dark suit, with an obscured or featureless face and tentacle-like appendages.

That distinction matters.

Fortnite’s Slender Man May Be Based on the Original Version

One of the most interesting details about the Fortnite design is what it apparently does not look like.

Slender: The Eight Pages is generally associated with a version of Slender Man featuring a black suit and black tie, but its interpretation of the character differs in several visual details.

Meanwhile, Slender: The Arrival developed its own recognizable interpretation. The game’s Slender Man has pale skin, but the character’s face has a more pronounced, textured appearance and, importantly, the later design uses a red tie. The 10th Anniversary version of The Arrival also significantly upgraded the character’s visuals.

The Fortnite interpretation reportedly appears closer to the earliest conceptual version: white-grey skin, a completely smooth face, black tie and elongated, almost skeletal proportions, with tentacles associated with the character.

That would potentially be significant from a licensing perspective.

Rather than being specifically The Eight Pages‘ Slender Man, The Arrival‘s Slender Man, or Marble Hornets‘ The Operator, Fortnite may simply be using the original Slender Man character created by Knudsen.

And that brings us to one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding a potential Dead by Daylight collaboration.

Slender Man and The Operator Are Not Necessarily the Same Character

For years, discussions surrounding a possible Slender Man chapter in Dead by Daylight have often focused on Marble Hornets.

That makes sense. Marble Hornets was one of the most influential early works to expand the Slender Man mythos, and its antagonist, The Operator, became one of the most recognizable interpretations of the character.

However, The Operator is a distinct character associated with Marble Hornets. Although heavily inspired by Slender Man, the character developed its own mythology, characteristics and presentation.

This distinction could actually make an official Slender Man collaboration easier to imagine.

Behaviour Interactive would not necessarily need the rights to Marble Hornets in order to create a Slender Man Killer. It could instead license the original Slender Man character and develop its own interpretation for Dead by Daylight.

In other words, a hypothetical Dead by Daylight Slender Man would not necessarily need to be The Operator.

It could be Slender Man himself.

Why the Fortnite Design Is So Interesting

This is where the visual clues become particularly important.

If Fortnite is indeed using an interpretation based on the original 2009 character, then the collaboration would demonstrate that this particular version of Slender Man can be commercially licensed and used in a major modern video game.

That does not automatically mean Behaviour has obtained the same license.

But it would demonstrate that the original character is still viable as a commercial property.

And the timing would be difficult to ignore.

Fortnite gets Slender Man during Halloween.

Behaviour has already demonstrated in 2026 that characters appearing in Fortnite can subsequently become Dead by Daylight collaborations.

The question therefore becomes less about whether Slender Man is suitable for Dead by Daylight—he arguably fits the game extremely well—and more about whether Behaviour and the relevant rights holders can reach an agreement.

Slender Man Is Almost Perfect for Dead by Daylight

From a gameplay perspective, Slender Man would also be an unusually natural fit for Dead by Daylight.

His entire concept revolves around stalking, psychological horror, distorted perception and an unnerving supernatural presence.

Behaviour could potentially build a Killer around mechanics involving:

  • teleportation or rapid movement;
  • hallucinations;
  • stalking Survivors from a distance;
  • visual distortions;
  • disappearing and reappearing;
  • tentacles;
  • interference with Survivor information;
  • or an ability based around making Survivors uncertain about where he actually is.

Even without copying the mechanics of Slender: The Eight Pages, there is a huge amount of material that Behaviour could work with.

And visually, the original Slender Man’s design is already extremely compatible with the Dead by Daylight aesthetic: a tall, faceless figure in a black suit emerging from the darkness of The Fog would require very little reinterpretation.

What About Marble Hornets?

This is perhaps the most fascinating part of the theory.

A Marble Hornets collaboration and a Slender Man collaboration are not necessarily the same thing.

The Operator is its own interpretation, while the original Slender Man was created by Eric Knudsen in 2009. Academic discussion of the character’s development has also documented how Marble Hornets and other online works contributed additional characteristics to the broader Slender Man mythology.

Interestingly, Slender: The Arrival itself was officially based on the Slender Man character created by Knudsen, while incorporating the work of the Marble Hornets writers and other creators. Blue Isle Studios describes the game as an official re-imagining and expansion of the original game.

The distinction therefore gives Behaviour several possible routes.

A future chapter could theoretically be based on the broader original Slender Man character rather than specifically licensing Marble Hornets and The Operator.

And if Fortnite is indeed using that original interpretation, it makes the possibility even more interesting.

Could Slender Man Arrive in Dead by Daylight in 2027?

This is where the speculation gets particularly exciting.

Behaviour has already demonstrated that major horror licenses can move from Fortnite to Dead by Daylight relatively quickly.

Jason is perhaps the clearest example. He was part of Fortnite’s 2025 Halloween lineup, and Dead by Daylight: Jason was released in June 2026.

Art the Clown followed a similar trajectory, appearing in Fortnite during Fortnitemares 2025 before being announced for Dead by Daylight in 2026.

Scooby-Doo provides another example, with the franchise appearing in Fortnite’s 2025 Halloween event before Behaviour announced a Scooby-Doo collection for Dead by Daylight.

If the same pattern were to happen with Slender Man, then a 2027 Dead by Daylight appearance would be a perfectly plausible timeframe to watch.

That is still speculation, however. There is currently no public Behaviour announcement confirming a Slender Man chapter.

The Bigger Question: Is This Just a Coincidence?

It could be.

Fortnite has become one of the largest platforms for crossover characters in gaming, and horror franchises naturally gravitate toward October. Dead by Daylight, meanwhile, has built much of its identity around bringing famous horror properties into the game.

There is therefore an obvious overlap between the two games.

But the recent examples are difficult to overlook.

Fortnite 2025: Jason Voorhees, Art the Clown and Scooby-Doo.

Dead by Daylight 2026: Jason Voorhees, Art the Clown and Scooby-Doo.

Now, if Fortnite adds Slender Man for Halloween 2026, the question becomes whether history will repeat itself once again.

The Most Interesting Possibility

The most interesting part of this entire theory may not even be the Fortnite collaboration itself.

It is the possibility that Fortnite could be introducing a very specific version of Slender Man.

If the reported design is accurate, the combination of the pale featureless face, black tie and tentacle-like appendages appears to point toward the earliest 2009 conception of the character rather than The Arrival or The Operator from Marble Hornets.

That could be important because it potentially gives Behaviour a clearly identifiable version of Slender Man to work with without necessarily requiring a Marble Hornets collaboration.

And if Behaviour is already working with the same rights holders—or has access to the necessary licensing—it would make a future Dead by Daylight appearance much easier to imagine.

None of this confirms that Slender Man is coming to The Fog.

But if he arrives in Fortnite during Fortnitemares 2026, it would be another piece of evidence for a pattern that has already repeated itself several times.

Jason. Art the Clown. Scooby-Doo.

And potentially next:

Slender Man.

If Behaviour follows the same trajectory once again, we might not have to wait particularly long to see the original faceless horror icon step into The Fog.
