In recent years we have seen the return of many 80s horror icons, such as Candyman, Ghostface, Myers, and now Jason Voorhees will also return thanks to the new TV series:

There is, however, one horror icon that is still stuck because of problems with his license: Freddy Krueger.

In fact, The Nightmare's last film was in 2010, and it was a film that was supposed to revive the brand with a trilogy, but due to not very good reviews from critics and audiences about that film, it was a shelved project and no more sequels were developed.

There is, however, a director who has recently indicated that he wants to develop a project regarding Wes Craven's creature that came to life in 1984 with the film 'A Nightmare on Elm Street.'

Mike Flanagan in fact discussed this to Script Apart, stating: "One of the projects that has always been on my list forever is A Nightmare on Elm Street. That would be really fun. I have a complete idea that I worked out a couple of years ago. The rights situation is so confusing that no one knows who really controls it. I would love to, but we have no idea who we should talk to. I spent almost a year of my life working with Heather Langenkamp and we talked about it. But it's like no one knows what to do. Maybe in the future, who knows."

The director of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and Doctor Sleep thus said he is in favor of working on Freddy Krueger, but currently the rights situation is so rough that it is hard to figure out who to talk to to see if there is a possibility.
