Since the beginning of 2022, one of the most famous works that has lost copyright rights is Winnie the Pooh, but it is not the only one, for example Bambi also lost copyright rights, and in 2024 it will be up to Mickey Mouse and Tiger,this means that, for example, we can all develop a story about Winnie The Pooh, but the important thing is that visually it doesn’t look like Disney’s designs, because those are still copyrighted.
Disney is trying to find a solution about it by creating live-action versions of the classic stories hoping that it can get them into the collective imagination, trying to "forget" the stories drawn with also new merchandise dedicated to new products, as in a few years they will all become public domain and Disney will not be able to make as much money as today, as they will no longer be his property. Winnie The Pooh, however, as mentioned a moment ago, is not the only license to have become free domain; for example, so is Alice in Wonderland, which in fact was chosen by Dead by Daylight to develop content based on Lewis Carroll's famous story:
And this becomes a very important precedent because Dead by Daylight had never done collaborations with products totally outside the horror world, and since they took advantage of the opportunity to use Alice in Wonderland without having to pay anyone to do so, this means that it may not be the only time they will adopt this alternative to produce new content.
In fact, for those who don't know, Peter Pan and Thor are also licenses that have become free domain, and on which any kind of content can be built, in fact from the director of the Winnie The Pooh horror movie, their horror movies will come:
Director Rhys Waterfield said, in an interview with TMZ, he wanted to expand his narrative universe by producing horror films of other public domain characters such as Thor and Peter Pan:
"One idea we have in mind is about Thor, the Nordic god: clearly he is a public figure, he does not belong to Marvel, so we imagined a reinterpretation of ours, and we could do it if we wanted to. Maybe it won’t have the same appeal as Winnie the Pooh, but we also have a lot of other titles planned...for example something about Peter Pan." Between the two projects, that of Peter Pan is the closest to becoming reality, in fact the producer Scott Jeffrey has also given some details about it: "Peter Pan’s horror film will be a lot of fun because basically the Neverland Island will be imagined as a kind of circus, and you’ll see some really intense versions of some of those famous characters, like Tinker Bell."
